Over the last 2 years, senior designer, Martin Schetter, has worked with his design team to create a new variation. Two years seems like a whole lot of time, just to create a new variation of a timepiece. It is, but, Lange imposes so many quality and design requirements when creating a timepiece, that it takes this long. The results are worth the wait, as this Saxon manufacture produces some of the most beautiful timepieces in the world.

The LANGE 31 is the world’s first mechanical watch to boast a power reserve of 31 days and a constant-force escapement that powers the going train with constant torque delivery. The enormous amount of energy needed to keep the watch running so long is transferred to the movement with a winding key and stored in a twin mainspring barrel. This guarantees that the balance receives an identical amount of energy every ten seconds, regardless of the state of wind of the springs.

A movement with such a large power reserve requires a lot of space. The movement alone, has a diameter of 37.3 mm and 9.6 mm thick. The requisite case is quite large. In fact, this is the largest A. Lange & Sohne timepiece available. For reference, Lange watch cases are generally 38 to 42 mm wide and 9 to 14mm thick. The case on the LANGE 31 is 45.9 mm wide by 15.9 mm thick. It’s big.

He achieved the same by first drawing out what she wanted to do, the way she viewed her subject and then opening her to more than one possibility of attaining her goal.

The year opened Tara June Winch’s horizons by introducing her to the works of more African writers. She was introduced to Kafka, Hemmingway, Shakespeare and Greek literature that helped her draw parallels between the Greek tragedies, Shakespeare’s tragic comedies and Aboriginal stories from her own country. During her year with Wole Soyinka she began work on her second novel which explores the inner truth of one’s own belief and one’s own culture. The indigenous writer has already signed a contract for her second novel and has also stated her joy of writing about her people. The ideology of passing knowledge from an older artist to a younger one is what makes the Rolex Mentor Protégé Initiative an attraction for both mentors and aspirants.

Telling a story of rich watchmaking tradition, that began 250 years ago in the heart of fine swiss watchmaking - the Vallée de Joux.

The full lineup has some compelling choices. The green on black is novel, but the blue dial really has my number. All have a black rubber strap, and all look pretty darn awesome in my opinion.

Here's a picture showing the tritium illumination. The tubes on the left are meant, I assume, to show how the material is vitrified into glass tubes. (There's more information and links about the technology on this review of the Luminox.)

The movement is a Sellita SW200, which is an interesting story in its own right. The ETA 2824 and 2892, as used in zillions of watches, are now becoming subject to sales restrictions by the parent conglomerate which has caused supply problems at independent brands like Christopher Ward. However, the designs are from the 1960s and therefore no longer copyrighted; Sellita and others can now sell exact copies to whomever wants them. Sorted, as they might say. It should be just as reliable and repairable as an ETA-branded 2824.

These are pre-announced; according to PR, the first 150 come out between mid-September and October, followed by general availability. If you pre-order, you can reserve your choice of serial number.

As is often the case with Christopher Ward, the price represents an excellent value indeed, and we hope to get one for review.
